HTML doesn’t “run”. It’s not a scripting language, it’s a markup language. All it does is mark sections of the document for the browser to display.
I like American music. Do you like American music? I like American music, too.
Other versions of me:
HTML doesn’t “run”. It’s not a scripting language, it’s a markup language. All it does is mark sections of the document for the browser to display.
CSS is the rules for how to display the marked-up document. Even when CSS is not defined for a document, the default stylesheet of the browser is used. It’s not an interpreted language.
well, a markup language, not necessarily hypertext markup language
I used to not use a case, because I had a ruggedized hiking phone that didn’t need one.
I tend to think the the obligation to action falls more heavily on the privileged. Those who aren’t marginalized have a duty to use their position to correct the injustices.
The price of meat is currently artificially lowered by several factors, including government subsidies and lax regulations. Correcting that would be good for everyone, even if it made meat a “sometimes” food for everyone but the rich.
wrong domain?
“Dead” is an adjective, modifying the antecedent of “he”, not an adverb modifying “is”.
Contrast “he is well”, where “well” modifies “is” as an adverb vs. “he is good” where “good” is an adjective modifying “he”. There’s no grammatic signifier which is which beyond the modifying word itself, so you need to see whether it’s in adverb form or adjective form.
“he died” describes an action
“he was dead” describes a condition / state / quality
“urban” means city, not town
Trust to be accurate or trust to be unbiased? I trust the hyperlocal paper to be unbiased but the articles are all over the place. I trust most large publications to be accurate but with their articles and editorials in line with the paper’s overall bias.
They add up (in the sense of getting louder) if they’re harmonized or party harmonized. They cancel out if they’re opposing or partly opposing. They become more continuous but not louder if they’re out-of-synch.
Kids see you reading an e-book, they don’t know what you’re doing, they just see you staring at s phone.
Kids see you reading a physical book, they see you’re reading, and what you’re reading. It helps foster a love of reading in them.
Income tax? No.
Sales tax? Yes.
If I have access to free food, I eat it. Doesn’t matter if I’m hungry, as long as I physically can I will.
I was only broke and homeless for a little over a year, and now I always know wherey next meal is coming from, but I can’t seem to shake the mindset of that low point in my life.
I haven’t had that problem here, ever.
It’s not new vs. old. Like many loanwords (hummus, shwarma) there was never one standard English spelling, but multiple phonetic transliterations.
It’s just that one looks like an adult wrote it and one looks like a child did. It happens that Heinz, when their “57” brand became popular, used the latter spelling, and that spelling became popular along with it. Other brands used different spelling.
a living language
Yes
do you ever phonetically say boatswain instead of bosun?
I never have occasion to say either.
How do you pronounce Worcestershire sauce?
Wursht-uh-shur
How do you feel about onomatopoeias in general?
Love 'em. My current favorite is “shakshuka”.
are onomatopoeias even words to you?
yeah, by definition
insisting on the old spelling becomes more ridiculous than going with the newer
Given the choice between looking ridiculous to others and feeling ridiculous to myself, I will always choose the former.
can you bring yourself to use a squeeze bottle for it or are you still tapping that 57
They’re not mutually exclusive. I also use packets and those giant pump containers.
convince me otherwise about vernacular and spelling
I’m not interested in convincing you away from a position with which I agree almost completely. Words change, language evolves, slang becomes informal speech becomes recognized usage. Some changes are improvements, some are not, but neither you or I have much hope of shifting the tide either way. While my time lasts, though, I’ll keep spelling the vinegary condiment as “catsup” and the pastry as “doughnut” and the cultured dairy as “yoghurt”.
That’s not an opinion, you’re just wrong on the facts. And that’s okay! The first step of learning is discovering your own ignorance.
The is the Pride Month content I came here for.
