Users should have the right to never touch the play store or agree to googles TOS.
vala@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Google Restricts Android Sideloading—What It Means for User Autonomy and the Future of Mobile Freedom – PurismEnglish3·4 days agoI recently started carrying a GPD microPC because of this bullshit.
It’s like a very bulky phone. Pocketable but kinda chonk. Thumb typing kinda thing.
But it runs Fedora + gnome with no problems.
My phone is now just for quick stuff and a way to make a WiFi hotspot.

vala@lemmy.worldto 3DPrinting@lemmy.world•I 3d printed a custom sized keyboard using open source software and hardware designs.English71·8 days agoLol ok. First off, that wasn’t mean.
Second, it was an opinion.
Third, it was a joke.
To explain the joke, keyboards with less keys than this exist and it’s a common meme for people to comment “not enough keys” when people share images of them.
Thought this was a keyboard community. Didn’t realize it was 3d printing.

You can install a full Linux distro now. At a high level it’s basically like WSL2 for windows.
I had to do professional software development work on one at one point. It was completely cursed but it worked.
Idk that Chromebooks count as being super locked down when most of them can run Linux apps.

It was the “several pieces” part that gave it away. Implies a negative which an LLM wouldn’t do in this context. It would be like “a few pieces” even it really was “several”.
vala@lemmy.worldto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•Github keeps shoving copilot everywhere.English2·12 days agoWhy are the suggestions all things that should just be links to other pages on the site?
What value is copilot offering here? It’s just a nondeterministic wiki that you can’t bookmark or cite.
I use copilot every day btw. This just doesn’t add value to the interface in any way.
vala@lemmy.worldto Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Do you actually audit open source projects you download?English30·12 days agoDepends on what you mean by “audit”.
I look at the GitHub repo.
- How many stars?
- Last commit?
- Open issues
- Contributer count
Do I read the whole code base? Of course not. But this is way more than I can do with closed source software.
They are not gassing people because they don’t have to. They are doing the genocide right there in the open on live TV and no one is stopping them.
Yesterday I asked an LLM “how much energy is stored in a grand piano?” It responded with saying there is no energy stored in a grad piano because it doesn’t have a battery.
Any reasoning human would have understood that question to be referring to the tension in the strings.
Another example is asking “does lime cause kidney stones?”. It didn’t assume I mean lime the mineral and went with lime the citrus fruit instead.
Once again a reasoning human would assume the question is about the mineral.
Ask these questions again in a slightly different way and you might get a correct answer, but it won’t be because the LLM was thinking.
