I think it’s done to avoid saying “vecinos” because non-Spanish speakers don’t always understand or accept that the masculine conjugation of the word is not reflective of how the word is interpreted by Spanish speakers (includes all genders).

One compromise that is widely adopted in the USA and Mexico is to use the “@” to indicate both the masculine and feminine conjugation of a given word applies.

      Example:

      Defiende a tus vecin@s.

And for those who think the whole thing is stupid, please get off your high horse. It clearly really matters to some people, especially queer young adults and teens.

Mexico does not have the greatest track record with queer people, so whatever makes them more comfortable, represented, and accepted as part of our community should be respected and encouraged, especially when the cost of doing so is just writing one single fucking letter differently.

      Cheers.

De que vergas estás hablando, wey?

No tienes que inventar que hacer que alguien se sienta incluído significa que tenemos que aceptar estupideces o ignorancia.

Es más, la gente que es diferente de lo que es normalmente aceptado por la sociedad se esconden entre los intelectuales, no los imbéciles-- son ingenieros, artistas, escritores, diseñadores, profesores, filósofos, doctores.

No solo son los que se dejan ver abiertamente.

          No seas ignorante.
