It takes a bit of work to get apps for typical stuff, have to go get Fdroid and allow install from other sources etc
RaoulDook@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Samsung teams up with Glance to use your face in AI-generated lock screen adsEnglish21·7 days agoThey have always had good hardware I think, but their firmware and apps went total shit years ago. I liked their old ones like the S5 and S4 that had notification LEDs and unlockable bootloaders for custom ROMs
RaoulDook@lemmy.worldto Mildly Infuriating@lemmy.world•The new fake "Indie" radio station in townEnglish81·8 days agoThe Sirius XM people are probably hassling you every day now right? Those bastards are the most annoying of any subscription service I think I’ve ever used.
RaoulDook@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Wikimedia Foundation's plans to introduce AI-generated article summaries to WikipediaEnglish96·8 days agoNovels are also not made to teach people how to read, but reading them does help the reader practice their reading skills. Beside that point, Wikipedia is not hard to understand in the first place.
RaoulDook@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•In North Korea, your phone secretly takes screenshots every 5 minutes for government surveillanceEnglish74·8 days agoYes, because here in the capitalist USA I am free to choose what phone and carrier I use, and what OS and software my phone have on them. The free market decided that I should have access to bootloader unlockable phones with open source OS and zero shitty Facebook apps spying on me.
RaoulDook@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Wikimedia Foundation's plans to introduce AI-generated article summaries to WikipediaEnglish256·8 days agoNope. Reading skills are improved by being challenged by complex language, and the effort required to learn new words to comprehend it. If the reader is interested in the content, they aren’t going to skip it. Dumbing things down only leads to dumbing things down.
For example, look at all the iPad kids who can’t use a computer for shit. Kids who grew up with computers HAD to learn the more complex interface of computers to be able to do the cool things they wanted to do on the computer. Now they don’t because they don’t have to. Therefore if you get everything dumbed down to 5th Grade reading level, that’s where the common denominator will settle. Overcoming that apathy requires a challenge to be a barrier to entry.
RaoulDook@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Wikimedia Foundation's plans to introduce AI-generated article summaries to WikipediaEnglish598·8 days agoIf people use AI to summarize passages of written words to be simpler for those with poor reading skills to be able to more easily comprehend the words, then how are those readers going to improve their poor reading skills?
Dumbing things down with AI isn’t going to make people smarter I bet. This seems like accelerating into Idiocracy

It sucks waiting for a really long time wondering if another drive is going to fail causing complete data loss.
RaoulDook@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•This new 40TB hard drive from Seagate is just the beginning—50TB is coming fast!English21·10 days agoYeah I would not touch RAID 5 in this day and age, it’s just not safe enough and there’s not much of an upside to it when SSDs of large capacity exist. RAID 1 mirror is fast enough with SSDs now, or you could go RAID 10 to amplify speed.
RaoulDook@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•AI is rotting your brain and making you stupidEnglish2·15 days agoDude we only need a few small nuclear reactors to power this new chatbot though
RaoulDook@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•AI is rotting your brain and making you stupidEnglish2·15 days agoIDK that kinda depends on the writer and their style. Concise is usually a safe bet for easy reading, but doesn’t leave room for a lot of fancy details. When I think verbose vs concise I think about Frank Herbert and Kurt Vonnegut for reference.
RaoulDook@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•It's Breathtaking How Fast AI Is Screwing Up the Education SystemEnglish01·21 days agoNo, it’s only more difficult for those without the skills to use the Index or Table of Contents in a book. Which is not really much of a difficult skill to learn. You pretty much need to know about alphabetical order and how one is at the front and the other is at the end of the book.
RaoulDook@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•It's Breathtaking How Fast AI Is Screwing Up the Education SystemEnglish1·21 days agoWell, here’s how you figure that out - think about it with your brain. Should children and young adults be given materials and assignments that require them to use thinking and develop their brains, or should they be given machines to do their thinking for them so that it’s easier to complete schoolwork?
One route develops valuable brain skills that can be useful for life, and the other teaches dependency on fancy machines to accomplish the same.

What do you propose to do when an apartment complex catches fire? Bucket brigade to put out the fire and handheld stretchers for the burn victims?
Also delivery vehicles are always relevant. They are everywhere, delivering the goods to the last mile of their destination. They will always be needed until something like Star Trek replicators can materialize goods directly into the home.
RaoulDook@lemmy.worldto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•"I'm not sure what the point of reporting crime is": Cyclist injured by motorist claims police "didn't care" and sent driver on course as "it's expensive to prosecute"English01·1 month agoThat’s nonsense, cars will always be useful in both rural areas and cities. Goods and services must be delivered to their destinations at a scale and granularity that trains and bikes simply can’t attain. Your whole anti-car movement amounts to tilting at windmills.
RaoulDook@lemmy.worldto Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•"I'm not sure what the point of reporting crime is": Cyclist injured by motorist claims police "didn't care" and sent driver on course as "it's expensive to prosecute"English0·1 month agoThis is more of a Fuck the Cops problem than with cars though. Cars are at least useful.
I don’t know about that but I heard there’s No True Scotsmen there.
Alternative option: Communists, move to China if America is so bad.
Coast to Coast of course
